quit smokingSmoking is a major risk factor for periodontal disease. Heavy smokers are seven times more likely to lose teeth from gum disease. Even light smokers are 2-3 times more likely to lose teeth from gum disease. Smokers are also at increased risk for a host of other health problems including COPD (a chronic lung problem), cardiovascular disease, stroke, and cancer.
